About Sequoyah Branham

Hey there! I’m Sequoyah, a West Texas ranch girl in love with the simplicities of ranch life. Among my favorite parts of ranching are looking over heavy bred cows day in and day out, observing the progress of a young horse in training, and noting the coming and going of each season—even if it feels like there’s only two in Texas (Hot and Cold).

Many of my story ideas are set in what I like to call “little white rock country” or the greasewood flats just around them. Some of my fondest (and wildest) memories took place in this patch of Texas from Fort Stockton to Ozona, up and across to Crane. I learned so much about riding the horse (not just the saddle) and handling livestock in this area that it has such a special place in my heart.

If I don’t set my stories there, they are usually in my second favorite stretch of Texas: where the plains roll and red dirt meets the sand. Growing up, I made a fair share of memories up in this end of Texas too.

Eventually, I’ll branch out to set my characters in other parts, but only once I know them half as well as I know the countryside of these. 😉

When I’m not writing you can find me leaving a coffee cup half full somewhere around the house (because I can never actually finish one), following cattle through a pasture (you’re shocked, I know), piddling with a young horse (because training seems like too structured of a word for what happens in that pen more often than not), or adventuring with my friends (everywhere from the couch to the mountains to a new bit of plains).

Ask me to recommend a western and straight off I’ll tell you anything by Elmer Kelton. The Good Old Boys, Hot Iron, and his Texas Rangers series are some of my favorites (not that I can truly pick a favorite).
If anyone is my “writing idol” it’s Elmer Kelton. His ability to immerse the story so deeply into the countryside combined with characters you can’t help but root for is something I aspire to achieve. (You know, maybe fifty books in;))
